Odds are that when you were growing up your mom knew all of your neighbours. Your street was full of kids you knew and your mom invited the neighbourhood over to run through the sprinkler while the other moms had coffee and chatted. If a neighbour had a new baby, you were probably sent over with a hot casserole and the new mother would have been warmly welcomed into the folds of the other families. Although some social conventions have (sadly) changed, what hasn’t is the need to connect with other local mothers. It has always been said it takes a village to raise a child. We say it takes a town. Who resides in the town we fondly call momstown? Well, it’s moms like you.

What began as a small mothers group run by one mom has flourished under tender loving care by local women to make momstown the supportive, organized ‘neighbourhood’ it is today. Founded in August 2007 by 3 moms from Burlington, Ontario, momstown.ca has now found a niche within many communities by providing moms with consistent activities and daily encouragement. momstown uses the internet to connect but our goal is to get moms off the computer and out of the house!

Christi & Ann-Marie, the “mamas of momstown”, are active in the Halton region but provide assistance to all Community Managers. momstown’s focus is on neighbourhood connections and our Community Managers will help each regional chapter grow and adapt with its own members, area and needs.

The girls below bring together your local neighbourhood and warmly welcome you to join in. Come live, laugh, learn and relax with us.

Welcome to momstown!!

Kim Edmiston - Owner momstown Markham

In 2006 my daughter was born and that is the day my life changed. I went from working the 9-5 (sometimes 9-whenever) to just wanting to be with my daughter and raise her myself. I quit my job in data base management in 2007 and decided to stay home with Alexandria, in 2008 my son Brayden was born.  Being home with the kids I quickly realized how isolated and lonely one could get as a stay at home mom. Locating local activities and other moms support proved very difficult. For someone that loves people and conversation this was very hard for me. I found that the local groups were not easy to find and found myself researching local resources and organizing events and outings for myself and those moms I had met along my travels. I joined a nearby chapter of momstown and I knew this was something that I wanted to bring to Georgina & East Gwillimbury.  Not only for the events but also I realized more importantly was that moms need other moms to connect with.  momstown is such a great source of support for new moms that I jumped on the chance to start my own chapter in Georgina and East Gwillimbury.

In September 2009 I was approached to expand my location into Markham/Unionville. This was an opportunity I could not turn down; it brought my two worlds back together. Although I grew up in Scarborough most of my days were spent in Markham, friends, work and of course shopping at Markville Mall, I even boarded my horse in Markham for a while. Working down the street from Unionville I used to love and go walk through the fabulous town on my lunch hour.  Now not only am I spreading the momstown word to my new community but also sharing it with my old community.

Now I am the momstown mama of Georgina, East Gwillimbury, Markham & Unionville and I am very proud of that!! I look forward to meeting you and your kids and having tons of fun doing so. J
